Thoughts on Quad

Quad has been around ages. Since Pink Floyd anyway, and probably long before then. I remember reading about the Floyd’s joystick panners and thinking what great fun mixing on those would be.

So fast forward to now. We have digital desks. We have multiple output sound cards. So panning in 3 dimensions should be easy?

Not exactly. Using the LS9 desk is great for some things, namely technical live gigs where time is of the essence (all gigs!). But why no 3d panner?

I often mix in quad - for some reason modern composers love this format. I think because its relatively easy to achieve?. I simply use sends on the desk without mixing through a bus but have no way of moving the sound around easily with out multiple fader moves.

I think i am going to make a Max patch specifically for driving Quad and different surround mixes coming from a soundcard. Watch this space!
